Why Doesn’t My Multimeter Beep on Continuity?

A continuity test can fail because of meter settings, lead placement, a blown fuse, poor contact, or because the circuit is not actually continuous.

Start with these checks

1. Disconnect power and discharge stored energy as required before resistance or continuity testing.
2. Put the leads in the correct COM and voltage/resistance jacks.
3. Select continuity mode and touch the probes together to verify the meter responds.
4. Clean the test points and make firm contact.
5. Check the meter manual if the display responds but the audible indicator does not.

When to stop

Stop when the fastener, tool, battery, wiring, or equipment shows damage; when the next step would exceed the tool's rating; or when the work requires procedures or training you do not have. Manufacturer instructions and equipment-specific service information take priority over general guidance.
