Why Isn’t My Torque Wrench Clicking?

A click-type torque wrench may not click because of an incorrect setting, technique, range mismatch, damage, or calibration problems.

Start with these checks

1. Confirm the target torque and units before tightening.
2. Make sure the target value is within the wrench's specified working range.
3. Pull smoothly from the designated handle position.
4. Stop if the fastener reaches an unsafe condition before the wrench clicks.
5. Have the tool checked if it was dropped, overloaded, or behaves inconsistently.

When to stop

Stop when the fastener, tool, battery, wiring, or equipment shows damage; when the next step would exceed the tool's rating; or when the work requires procedures or training you do not have. Manufacturer instructions and equipment-specific service information take priority over general guidance.
