Troubleshooting Guide

Do You Need a True-RMS Multimeter?

True-RMS capability matters when measuring AC waveforms that are not clean sine waves, which can occur around electronic controls and variable-speed equipment.

Start with these checks

  1. Identify the types of AC loads and controls you troubleshoot.
  2. Use a meter with safety ratings appropriate to the electrical environment.
  3. Do not assume True-RMS alone makes a meter suitable for every circuit.
  4. Check bandwidth, measurement range, and manufacturer specifications when waveform accuracy matters.
  5. Follow safe electrical test procedures regardless of meter type.

When to stop

Stop when the fastener, tool, battery, wiring, or equipment shows damage; when the next step would exceed the tool's rating; or when the work requires procedures or training you do not have. Manufacturer instructions and equipment-specific service information take priority over general guidance.
