Impact vs. Chrome Sockets: What’s the Difference?
Chrome hand sockets and impact sockets are designed for different jobs. Knowing the difference helps prevent damaged tools, damaged fasteners, and the wrong socket at the worst possible moment.
What matters
- Impact sockets are designed to handle repeated shock loading.
- Chrome sockets are generally intended for hand-tool use.
- Do not assume a socket is impact-rated because it fits an impact wrench.
- Look for the manufacturer's impact rating and intended use.
Before you buy
Think about the actual job first: fastener size, access, torque, environment, frequency of use, and compatibility with the tool you already own. A product that looks impressive on a product page can still be the wrong tool for the job.
Fix It Better rule: Buy for the work you actually do, not for the biggest number printed on the package.
