Metric vs. SAE Socket Sizes: How to Choose
Metric and SAE sockets are different measurement systems. The right socket is the one that fits the fastener exactly—close-enough sizing can round the fastener and turn a quick repair into a harder job.
Metric versus SAE: the simple difference
Metric socket sizes are measured in millimeters, such as 10 mm, 13 mm, and 17 mm. SAE, also called imperial, sizes are measured in fractions of an inch, such as 3/8 inch, 1/2 inch, and 9/16 inch. Equipment built in different regions may use one system more often, but modern repairs commonly involve both.
How to identify the right size
- Read the fastener marking or equipment manual when one is available.
- Try the likely socket by hand first; it should seat fully with almost no rocking.
- Use six-point sockets on tight or corroded fasteners for more contact with the flats.
- Do not hammer a nearly fitting socket onto a fastener.
Why close sizes are risky
Some metric and SAE sizes are close, but they are rarely exact. A loose socket concentrates force on the corners of the fastener, which can round it. When the fastener is already damaged, stop and choose a better-fitting socket or an extraction method rather than forcing a near match.
What to keep in a practical set
For general maintenance, keeping both a metric and an SAE socket set prevents delays. Pair them with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet for versatile work and add 1/2-inch drive sockets for larger, higher-torque jobs.
