How to Choose a Multimeter for Maintenance Work
multimeter electrical voltage resistance continuity current testing
Read guide →Why Doesn’t My Multimeter Beep on Continuity?
A continuity test can fail because of meter settings, lead placement, a blown fuse, poor contact, or because the circuit is not actually continuous. Disconnect power and discharge stored energy as required before resistance or continuity testing. Put the leads in the correct COM and voltage/resistance jacks. Select continuity mode and touch the probes together to verify the meter responds. Clean the test points and make firm contact. Check the meter manual if the display responds but the audible indicator does not.

True-RMS capability matters when measuring AC waveforms that are not clean sine waves, which can occur around electronic controls and variable-speed equipment. Identify the types of AC loads and controls you troubleshoot. Use a meter with safety ratings appropriate to the electrical environment. Do not assume True-RMS alone makes a meter suitable for every circuit. Check bandwidth, measurement range, and manufacturer specifications when waveform accuracy matters. Follow safe electrical test procedures regardless of meter type.
